Miyadaiku experience

Miyadaiku Carpenter Experience

Yokohama is a city where its historic neighborhoods blend seamlessly with cutting-edge contemporary culture. Today, we are introducing a unique tour which offers an immersive experience of both the old and the new cultures of this vibrant city. The highlight of the tour is the rare opportunity to apprentice with a “Miyadaiku”—traditional Japanese temple and shrine carpenter—a craft with over 1,400 years of history and recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The hands-on Miyadaiku experience is provided in partnership with Hanamasu Woodworks Co., Ltd. You’ll take part at their Yokohama workshop, at an active wooden construction site in Kanagawa Prefecture, or at a specialized processing facility for temple and shrine architecture. Under the guidance of skilled Miyadaiku artisans, you will learn firsthand about the deep traditions and sophisticated techniques of Japanese wooden architecture.
The experience begins with putting on traditional Miyadaiku attire and learning the meaning behind it. You’ll then observe the artisans’ masterful skills up close and try your hand at “kanna shaving” under the instruction of a master carpenter. At the end of the tour, you’ll receive a symbolic Miyadaiku Apprentice Certificate as a special keepsake.
Surrounded by the scent and texture of wood and the soothing sound of tools in use, you’ll awaken your senses during this deeply rewarding experience. This is a rare opportunity to engage with Japanese culture from a fresh perspective. Why not explore the sustainable and ever-evolving traditions of Japan through this unforgettable “Miyadaiku Tourism” experience?

Sankeien Garden
Sankeien Garden
Sankeien Garden is a perfect place to experience the essence of traditional Japan, where historic architecture and natural beauty exist in perfect harmony. Spanning approximately 175,000 square meters (43.2 acres), the garden is home to numerous historically significant Japanese buildings that were relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura, and other culturally rich regions. It’s an ideal destination for a relaxing and contemplative stroll.
Out of the 17 historic structures found throughout the garden, 10 have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, and the entire garden itself is recognized as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
One of the highlights of summer at Sankeien is the blooming of lotus flowers. During peak season, the large pond becomes a sea of soft pink blossoms. From Saturday, July 19 to Monday (public holiday), August 11, the garden will host the special Early Morning Lotus Viewing event, held only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, during which the gates open early at 7:00 AM—allowing visitors to enjoy the dreamy sight of lotus flowers in the quiet of the morning.
Other seasonal attractions include interactive activities like the “Lotus Learning Corner,” where visitors can discover more about the plant through fun and educational games, and a “Uchiwa (Fan) Making Workshop,” perfect for families and craft enthusiasts.
