Yokohama Central Wholesale Market
Just a short distance from Yokohama Station, the Yokohama Central Wholesale Market—the third oldest of its kind in Japan—is one of the country’s most important distribution hubs, supporting Japan’s rich food culture by bringing together fresh ingredients from across the nation and around the world.
While the market primarily serves professionals, the Related Facilities Building is open to the public, featuring restaurants and shops where you can enjoy fresh seafood such as expertly prepared seafood rice bowls. This area is a well-loved hidden gem for those seeking an authentic taste of Yokohama.
Every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the Marine Products Wholesale Building opens to the public, allowing visitors to purchase fresh seafood directly. You might even encounter rare fish varieties not often seen in stores! Families can also enjoy hands-on events such as the dynamic tuna-cutting show or the “Hama no Uogashi Workshop,”
where participants can create adorable fish charms out of yarn.
For a deeper experience, join the Market Special Exploration Tour, available by advance reservation (except on closed days). This unique behind-the-scenes tour includes sampling fresh seafood, watching live auctions up close, and stepping into a –50°C (-58°F) tuna freezer!
You can choose between Course A and Course B—with Course B offering a gourmet dinner
at a restaurant that sources ingredients directly from the market.
It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see, walk, and taste the world of Japanese food culture firsthand. Wake up early and experience the energy of the market and its top-tier gourmet delights!
