MIYADAIKU Carpenter Experience

MIYADAIKU Experience

The highlight of this tour is the opportunity to apprentice under a “MIYADAIKU Traditional Japanese Wooden Architecture” – traditional temple carpenters, whose craft boasts a history of 1,400 years and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage! Hanamasu Mokko Co., Ltd. is the only place in Japan where you can learn about MIYADAIKU architecture and techniques directly from active temple carpenters.

MIYADAIKU are specialized carpenters who have built and repaired shrines and temples in Japan since the Asuka period (592–710). They use a traditional wood-joining technique called kigumi, which relies on precisely carved joints and natural materials—without any nails or metal fittings.

The ‘MIYADAIKU Experience’ by Hanamasu Mokko Co., Ltd. lets you become a MIYADAIKU apprentice for a day. You’ll learn directly from active MIYADAIKU about traditional Japanese architecture and their sophisticated skills. The program begins by putting on a MIYADAIKU work outfit and learning the meaning behind it. You then observe master techniques up close, study how wooden joints work, and finally try your hand at planing wood under the guidance of the head carpenter. At the end, you receive an official ‘MIYADAIKU Apprentice Certificate’ to commemorate your experience.

Through the MIYADAIKU Experience, you can connect with Japan’s oldest architectural traditions from a fresh perspective and discover how they remain both sustainable and innovative today.

Location: The exact venue will be announced in advance, depending on the work site for that day.

Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum
Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum
If you’re feeling a little hungry, why not experience “eating,” “making,” and “learning” about ramen?

For that, we recommend the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum—the world’s first ramen food amusement park, recreating the retro streets of 1958 Showa-era Japan.

On the 1st floor and B2 level, carefully selected famous ramen shops from across Japan gather in one place. To make tasting multiple flavors easy, they offer “mini ramen”, perfect for sampling while walking around.

The Ramen-Making Experience lets you learn how to make noodles from wheat flour. You can enjoy your freshly made ramen on the spot or take the noodles home. (Reservation required; from ¥4,700 per person, admission fee not included.)

The museum also features a gallery to learn about ramen’s culture and history, as well as shops selling local ramen varieties and related merchandise.
